  Athenian Tetradrachma
  Greek, 449 BCE
  Silver
Athenian four drachma coin, minted under the reign of Pericles during the building of the Acropolis. Obverse shows a helmeted portrait of the Goddess Athena. Reverse shows Athena’s symbols, the owl, the olive branch, and the moon. The coin is 22mm in diameter
This object movie was created from a 3D model of the coin. The surface geometry and texture were captured using structured light scanning. In this case the structured light software used was from Eyetronics NV, and the optical projection and photographic system was developed at CHI. XYZ locational range triplets were captured every 160 microns, producing over 38 location samples per square mm, with 10 texture pixels between each locational sample. Because of the irregular edge of the coin, 13 separate scans were aligned to produce the final result. The alignment and integration of the scans was carried out using proprietary "best fit" and integration algorithms from Eyetronics NV. The texture map and associated UV coordinates were generated at the same time. Final material attributes were added in Maya, using a PhongE shading model.
